Have copy of installation disk(cracked disk) on linux computer need to transfer to

I copied xp disk to debian computer, now cd is cracked want to put on virtual machine.

I built computer with:
AMD PHENOM II 1090T X 6 processor
ASUS MB
10Gigs ram
1Tb sata hd

Os Debian squeeze
I actually used 40G pata hd for testing purposes.

Anyway I want to install xp on Vm. Do I just use ssh or vnc to transfer?
Also when I copied to file I'm not sure if any components are missing. It is a registered copy, I have the key. I would have copied xp hd but it's corrupt.

Any feed back would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You don't need to transfer the XP disk into the virtual machine; if you have the iso image, you can mount it as a virtual CD, and use that to install to an empty virtual machine.

Hi,

Since you have a product key for XP, download the official ISO from
Microsoft Windows® XP Service Pack 3 (SP3).

You can then create a VM host for the M$ WinXP client with the ISO.
If you attempt to use your current XP install you will have nothing but problems. Easy way is to download the ISO then create the install.

Hey onebuck I just downloaded the iso and burned it using brasero and it didn't produce bootable image of xp. I used brasero to burn fedora 14 and it boots just not xp-iso. I thought I installed all of the multimedia codecs. I was looking in synaptic it doesn't show wm32codecs
Am I supposed to add something to this iso to make it bootable like winloader?

The iso onebuck gave a link too contains only service pack 3 for Windows XP. You can't download an official copy of XP from Microsoft.

Anyways, you have a ISO already on your computer, so use it. You don't need to burn it first. Assuming from your other thread that you are using Virtualbox you already have the link to the manual, so do yourself a favor and read it, so you learn how to setup a VM and install an OS on it.

By the way, you don't need any multimedia-codec to burn a bootable ISO.

Yes that was the purpose, but also related to other part of this thread where my xp is corrupted, where it was suggested not to use that 1

How did you copy your XP-CD? Using dd or just copied the files?

just copied not burned.

At the time I did it I didn't know brasero would've burned it to file so that I could've burned new disk if the other got cracked or scratched too badly.
I tried online cd repair solutions but after doing cd. won't turn freely to be read.

The machine is an acer 3620 that had original installation. It has a PQ Service partition is it possible that there's a clean file within that partition?

I doubt. Without a proper ISO you will not be able to install your Windows to a VM.

I need to produce an image from hd being that installation cd is cracked. As far as the cd that was copied to file on another computer(Dell optiplex-gx1) it didn't copy the vital info to create iso. For now just to continue learning how to install a system to VB, I'll just install Fedora Wins7 & Ubuntu just for the experience & progress. Recovering the xp isn't a major issue, I could pick that project back up at a later date. There's just so much to learn in linux you can't just let 1 thing have you sitting in 1 spot.

Why should we support a cracked version of windows and why should we support pirated software?

Don't want to start debate but one should stop using pirates software's,instead use licensed one's or open source.

It was the installation disk for my machine I have winkey. I can use any xp-cd on my machine to reinstall xp as long as I have my original key and it would not be piracy. In fact if you install on multiple legally you just buy the extra, unless the machine you istall to already has keycode.

Hi,

You burn the ISO image.

If your WinXP install is bootable then you should be able to get into the recovery mode. Then place the burnt ISO image that you downloaded in the cd drive to initiate the cd image. After that you would follow the screen information.

Even if your install is infected you could just place the CD image into the drive, the windows IE will launch it. You will be given the option to use the CD Image, proceed from there.

If you don't wish to go this route then contact M$ support and request a replacement CD since you have the product key. Or if the install was OEM go the manufacture route and request a replacement.
