I 'm new to linux. I just installed RH linux 9 as a second OS in my computer. Primary is Win98se. They are installed in separate hard disks. The Grub menu shows two options for linux. One is ¨Red hat Linux (2.4.20-8 smp)¨; the other is ¨Red hat Linux-up (2.4.20-8)¨.
What is the difference between this two options. I had tried both and seem to work the same.
I had noted that when I boot from the smp option during boot up sequence I see some¨ hdb drive not ready for command¨ messages should I worrie about this messages?. Thank you for any clarification.

dunno about redhat, but ive got GRUB for debian, and it too has 2 boot options for debian. one is normal, one is a 'safe mode'. I would say its not much to worry about, but if you wanna look into it, you can edit what gets executed when you select the optiobn by pressing e (i think, GRUB will tell you), then you can see whats going on. I recommend you don't change it tho!!

i would use the one without the HDD error personally.....

If you have run RHN, chances are it updated the system and installed a new kernel. If I am correct, the "smp" kernel is one that supports Symmetric Multiprocessing.

during installation u can chose varios other kernls also to install apart from the generic kernel available
so u have he option of installing
kernel-smp
kernel-big mm
kernel-boot

u can use kernel-smp ,but is is recommended for systems have more than one processors
