Got pretty far, but just short of goal...Apache/FTP Question(s)
HowD all,
First things first, this site rules. I usually find all my questions have been asked and answered in a search of the forum...
...but
I was not able to find some info on the DocumentRoot for Apache. I want to change the current DR from /usr/local/apache/htdocs to something like /home/name/www. The reason for this is like a typical virtual domain name web hoster...you have a domain, you ftp your pages up, and bam, that's what's loaded. I tried using some various link arrangements...no dice. I'm obviously missing something here.
The second question I had is that I've installed vsftp and it works great. But...how can I have someone ftp into the linux box, and his/her home directory is actually two directories on a different box that is running that other OS? The HD on the linux box is small and I want to serve files on the computer that is running that other OS. I have installed SAMBA, and I can see the Samba server under the computers that are in the workgroup when viewing from that other computer. How can I actually share the files back and forth? Can I have files servered "Through" the linux box?
Since the 0 replies is gone, and you've already got your email, I will re-itterate my suggestion here
About 1/3 the way down my httpd.conf file I found Apache's DocumentRoot, you can edit that to whatever you want to be the "home directory" for apache, and that *should* work.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by your statement above. Maybe it's too early in the morning...need the java to kick in.

Cool
Unfortunately it's not that simple. I already changed the httpd.conf file to reflect where I want the DocumentRoot to be (changed two lines in the .conf file for DocumentRoot). I'm starting to think this is a permission issue. I seem to "Not have permission" when I try to view the index.html file in the new DocumentRoot. I'm too new to Linux to really understand the permission issue...perhaps suggestions along that line? Sorry for such a bone head question.
As far as mounting the drives from the other computer running that other OS, I've tried that. I can't seem to mount them. I tried something like (I can't quite remember) mount -t //<computer name> <mount point> or some such thing. I think I had a user in there too somewhere. Anyway...no dice. I can't even look in the linux box from the computer running that other OS.
I got so close to where I wanted to be after doing a LAMP install. It actually worked...just not quite the way I wanted...so far.
