Getting music CD's to play without the cable

I am very new to Linux. I am running Mandrake 10 (official) in a dual boot system with XP home. I have a Soundblaster 16 PCI card that works in XP. When I am in Linux I can hear all the system sounds just fine. However when I try and play an audio cd with KsCD in KDE, I don't hear any sound. I did a search before posting this and it was suggested that I needed to hook up the audio cable from the back of my CD player to the MB. However I can't find the audio cable that came with it. I suppose that I could try and buy one, but I was wondering if there was any alternative to this? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry

If it works in XP you already have a cable from your CDROM to your Soundcard.. your problem is you don't have the volume turned up in KSCD... its a little bar usually under the LED portion of the program.. trust me, by default its turned all the way down when you first launch it...

There is a plugin for XMMS that allows cds to be played digitally.
It is called cdread, and it should be available from http://www.xmms.org.

Simply install it, and then play the CD using XMMS

I hope this helps

trickykid. You were right. The cable is hooked up. I just cracked the case to verify. I am the idiot! The volume was turned up to 50% when I checked it. I turned it up all the way and still no sound.

iBall Thanks for the link to the program. The RPM wasn't for my distro. I downloaded the .tar, but I am clueless as to what to do with it. I am going to spend some time in the man pages to see if I can figure it out.
Thanks,
Larry

You should simply extract the tar file somewhere
then in a console as root (su) change to that directory where you extracted the file and then type

./configure

if you get no error messages then

make

and finally

make install

restart XMMS and you should see the plugin there, when you add CD audio files they should play fine.

the xmms-cdread plugin didn't work for me. Fortunately the xmms-cdaudio plugin does work
