Gentoo Stage Extraction Help

I'm trying to install Gentoo for the first time and when I try to extract my stage tarball I get thousands and thousands of errors (the file could not be opened type). I'm using a LiveCd and I'm using this command to extract the stage tarball.

Code:
tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage<your stage>.tar.bz2
What's going on?

Looks like you didn't mount your devices.
Fierst do:

# swapon /dev/hdax
# mount /dev/hdax /mnt/gentoo
# mkdir /mnt/gentoo/boot
# mount /dev/hdax /mnt/gentoo/boot
# cd /mnt/gentoo

...next untar your tarball(stage 2 might be a better choice if your new with this).

are you sure that you have the name of the file right?
My stage that I downloaded had this file name: "stage1-x86-2004.2.tar.bz2"

On my x86 LiveCD I have these two Stage 3 files in the stages directory:
stage3-i686-2004.2.tar.bz2
stage3-x86-2004.2.tar.bz2

So the extraction command is actually

tar -xvjpf /mnt/cdrom/stages/stage<your stage>-<your arch>-<LiveCD Version>.tar.bz2
