I can't seem to update this version of linux. It keeps giving me the same error. installation requires installation of packages from not authenticating packages.Does any one know how to bypass this?
As I read it, gamedrift is a linux distribution based on Ubuntu...that is, it appears to be a standalone installation and would replace your current distribution.
Please explain, in detail, what you are trying to accomplish with an "upgrade" of a distro you're not running.
Since I was having multiple problems with gamedrift I decided to try Sparky Linux. Sparky Linux updated for me no problem. I am able to use my wifi adapter too. This Linux is what I am going to try now, because it updated when it said it had updates and I couldn't get my usb wireless adapter working until I tried this distro. It also let's me use my own password instead of giving me one while installing. Right now I am trying to figure out how to add games with this version of linux. If you can help me with this linux, thanks in advanced.
So, you don't really want to upgrade/change your distro to gamedrift. I think that's a good call, since it hasn't been modified/updated since 2011.
Suggest you start a new thread in the Software -> Games forum with specific questions about running games in whatever you're using ("This version of Linux" doesn't really tell us...Sparky? Ubuntu?). I'm sure you'll find some savvy help there.

If you like to play games in Linux, you might want to try Ubuntu or Mint. Both of them have you choose your own password during installation.
Games work fine on them. Steam games with Linux support work.
Try a live version of Ubuntu/Mint to see if the wireless adapter works with them. They have extensive hardware support, so chances are it's work.
I'm running Mint 19 on this 2011 i3 laptop. And all hardware is supported right out of the box
Edit:
Trying to update an 8 year old Linux version won't work. LTS versions have the longest support of all Linux distributions and those get 5 years max. That's the reason your update manager doesn't work. You need to install a way more more recent Linux distro. Just download the latest Ubuntu or Mate LTS version (18.04 Ubuntu or Mint 19).
