Click on your home folder.
Then in the menu, View -> Show Hidden Folders.
Click on .mozilla, then firefox.
I there a "lock" file or any files with a lock picture on them?

Google for gtk-qt-engines and firefox problem.

I had the exact same problem, had to remove gtk-qt-engine and delete and .gtkrc* files from my home dir.

This problem was affecting many (if not all) GTK apps run under KDE

I had the same problem and it turned out that I had changed my window decoration/theme in SuSE. There are a couple of the looks you can choose from that made firefox close while trying to load. Did this happen to you after changing some of the look & feel options in KDE?

I had his problem after I installed Java and added the wrong plug in. Did you install any extensions of plugins?

Knowing exactly what is going on requires the console output to be posted.
1. open a console and run "firefox >> help.txt".
2. look into help.txt with your favorite text editor.
3. copy and paste what's in there to the text area.
