So, there's no rpm for firefox 1.0.4 for mandriva/mandrake 2005LE (or 10.2 even).
So I get it from the firefox site, as a tar.gz
I unpack it with ark and it makes a nice little "firefox-installer" directory (I don't want an installer directory, just a firefox one ).
if I then try ./firefox-installer, I get told it's a directory, if I then cd to /home/john/firefox-installer and then do ./firefox-installer it starts the install graphic, so I tell it "install" and when asked, choose /usr/share/firefox for a directory, which it promptly makes for me.
So I end up with /usr/share/firefox/firefox, but the damn directory is empty (and yes I've checked for hidden files).
All I want to do is install the damned thing, so that it has a menu entry and I can make an icon on the desktop (link to application etc etc).
Are you installing as root (needed to write to /usr/share/firefox), or as a regular user ? Normally, one would install firefox to ~/bin/firefox or somesuch.

plz use locate firefox, to find out in which directory has it installed.
the executable is ./firefox.U will find this file along with the others where u installed it.
once u find the executable u can give that path for the desktop icon.thereis a watermark.png file also for ur icon.

but for the life of me, I can't find the executable - what might it be called ??? Or, how would I get rid of that lot and start from scratch i.e. untarring the tar.gz and taking it from there ???
/usr/bin/firefox is the executable. by the looks of that list, it is a symbolic link (basically equivalent to a shortcut in windows) to /usr/share/firefox/firefox. executables or "binaries" don't have a .exe extension in linux. most time when you install something, it will create a binary in one of: /bin, /usr/bin, /usr/local/bin, /sbin /usr/sbin etc... (bin = binary).

re-run the installer, point the output to /home/john/bin/firefox
Don't manually install to /usr... I've seem bad thing happen.
Oh, and run the installer as root, so it can have read access to some mozilla stuff.
once done, it'll be in /home/john/bin/firefox.
you can add that to your path, but I:
$ ln -s home/john/bin/firfox home/john/bin/firefox/firefox
(symlink)
Well I've tried godzeros suggestion. "It" wouldn't let me make a /home/john/bin/firefox, so I just did /home/john/firefox.
Which now exists, if I then open that, and click the firefox shell script it will open firefox, but I can't make a desktop link.
It keeps telling me that it can't "write to /home/john/Desktop/firefox. Access Denied". Now that I don't follow! It's my users desktop, and in all previous versions of mandrake that I've used, creating a link to application has been straight forward.
Why on earth it's decided that I, as user, don't have permissions to put a link/shortcut on my own desktop is beyond me!
So much for mandrake/mandriva making improvements
Perhaps someone could tell me how I'd do that please ???
Well, I went back "to square one" and using the locate firefox, deleted all related entries to firefox except the tar.gz
Then I have unpacked the tar.gz in my home directory.
Then, I've just "su'd" to root and then cd'd into /home/john/firefox-installer, and then from there, done ./firefox-installer and the install graphic has started.
I've then told the installer that it should be going to /usr/share/firefox (which incidentally doesn't/didn't exist, so the installer asked if I wanted it created, - yes). Although godzero suggest differently, I'd read somewhere that that "should" be the right place (I don't really know but........)
The terminal says this, which I don't understand :-

it's also opened firefox on the firefox start page, but the terminal has hung and only changes when I hit enter.
One of the "guides" I was reading, said about making /usr/share/firefox, well obviously I've already done that earlier, so I skip that, then as per the instructions I do

This has enabled me to be able to start firefox from a terminal.
I'd like to have it as a desktop shortcut, but If I try to make a link to application, I'm getting an error that tells me "Access denied. Could not write to /home/john/Desktop/link to Application.desktop."
How would I change it so that I can make the link to application ???
