Filesystem structure


and of course im new here, i have a question that has been on my mind, is there a thread that my convey what each folder is for, etc, var.
also i am installing firefox, compiled it, installing it as a user, it wants to install to /home/name/
do i want to install it there, will my other users be able to access it. or should i install it as root, into some folder i dont know about.
and will it automatically be add to startmenu

install it as root, the official installer will want to install it to /opt/firefox/ and place a universally accessible link in /usr/bin/ nice.

Welcome to LQ.

For a guide to the Filesystem Hierarchy - see:
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/

I would install firefox to:
/opt/firefox/version

Then create a standard symlink:
ln -s /opt/firefox/version /opt/firefox/current

Then create any links you need withing your PATH and window manager to:
/opt/firefox/current/firefox
