Fedora display problems

Hi all, I just installed fedora 5 for the first time. I had to use the text based install because the graphical interface always just looked like a line of scatter graphics in the middle. I have tried to install several distros and only mepis has made it into x. I'm guessing it's a vsync or hsync setting messing it up or resolution. So how do I change the resolution/frequencies from the command line or mabey install new nvidia drivers? I'm dual booting with winXP, and running a nvidia BFG 7800 GT OC using a samsung 1100df monitor(I know the exact specs already)

What happened when you try to start x what error do you get?

Try going into /etc/X11/xorg.conf using vi or nano

# su
# vi /etc/X11/xorg.conf

You must be Root (#su) to edit the xorg.conf file, edit I think section Monitor and maybe Screen. Use your monitors literature to find out what settings you need to use.\

Edit: If that doesn't work go to nvidia.com and download the latest nvidia driver. I belive there's installation instructions on the download page. Just type sh NVIDIA-driver-<Version>.run

Edit2: vi( i to insert text, then esc + :wq to save file and exit vi)
nano (not sure use # man nano to see its features)
