Hi Everyone,
I am absolutely new to linux world and I just finished my first linux installation, so I am using Fedora 8 and my first step it`s to connect to the internet, but I am in trouble because I don`t know nothing about networking.
I tried Graphical configuration with system-config-network but I can`t do it. The computer detects two hardware devices: Intel Corporation 82801 DB PRO/100 VE (MOB) Ethernet Controller and INtel Corporation Pro/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection. I use a Belkin Adsl Modem with Wireless G Router, ADSL connection.
I am currently using Windows XP, the internet is working, and all information I know how to get it`s that I have two connections: LAN 1394 Net Adapter with firewall, and Wireless Connection with firewall (IP 192.168.2.2 Sub-mask 255.255.255.0 with DHCP).
In system-config-network I can`t use DHCP,it doesn`t work.
I don`t know where to start to configure the internet connection.. Should I configure DNS? The only thing I know it`s an IP...
Can you give me an overview about the situation, an advice please.
I would appreciate that you recommend me introductory books about networking to solve my problem for now and to adquire basic knowledge related With networks. Any kind of help it`s welcome.

By the way Network Manager doesn`t work and don`t know why, when i click nothing occurs.
I tried iwlist scan command at the terminal but it`s says someting like: "bash command not found"

There are a lot of things to sort out here and I suggest that at least in the beginning we forget the wireless aspect.

Wireless is still one of the more difficult things to get going in Linux and it is always easier when you are sure the basic networking parts of the installation are working.

I can't imagine that the Intel wired card is going to be a problem so the first thing is to make sure you have a cable from that to your Belkin Router.

Then start up a Command Prompt Window, change to being root by issuing the command:

su -

in it and giving the root password. That's a horizontal dash otherwise known as hyphen after the su and separated from it by a space.

The prompt itself should then change from something like:

[bbfuller@atx17 ~]

to

[root@atx17 ~]

At the root command prompt issue the command:

ifconfig

If you highlight the response with the mouse you can probably find some way to copy it onto a memory stick and get it to your Windows environment - which I assume you are working from - so that you can paste it into a message window here. Beats having to write it all out.

When you come back, let me know if you have installed from a DVD or one of the live cd's as they are slightly different to set up, and also if you are using Gnome or KDE as your desktop. Once again, some things are in slightly different places depending on which you are using.

First I want to say that the wireless device it`s now active, it became active with iwconfig and iwlist scan commands. It`s active but I can`t access the internet...
I am using Gnome as my desktop, and I installed Fedora 8 from a DVD.
I have a /shared partition (VFAT) and I couldn`t save documents there don`t know why (another problem!), it says that I haven`t permission or simply don`t save the files but don`t ask for a root password, however, I saved directly to Windows NTFS partition and that`s how I can share with you the following information (which I don`t know how to interpret!):

Well, according to the output of:

iwlist scan

your wireless network is just waiting for you to connect to the access point NetMiguel. Is that yours and do you have the encryption key it is talking about?

You still need to tell me if you are using Gnome or KDE and if it is from DVD or live CD.

Like I wrote before in the last message I am using Gnome desktop and installed Fedora 8 from DVD.
"NetMiguel" it`s the identifying name of my wireless access point, as I can confirm in Windows (and encryption it`s activated). I have a "password" may be it`s the encryption key you`re talking about but don`t know I can I use it.

You did indeed tell me about Gnome and DVD, apologies.

Usually, when you have got this far there is an icon representing the NetworkManager on the taskbar of a Gnome desktop in the top right corner of the screen. If it's there left clicking on it should bring up the same network(s) as you get from iwlist, and left clicking on that network should prompt you for the encryption passphrase and a further password which can be anything you can remember. That way NetworkManager stores the complicated encryption passphrase and all you have to type when you connect is the password.

If the NetworkManager icon isn't showing, try:

service NetworkManager status

at a root command line. That should tell you if the background service is running.

If it is not, then:

system-config-services

will bring up the services configuration where you can put a mark against NetworkManager, start it from the toolbar and importantly save the configuration so it always starts.

Now you should have access to the NetworkManager.

How much success you have connecting will depend on a couple of things.

Firstly, NetworkManager doesn't yet like any encryption method higher than basic WPA-PSK and sometimes not even that. If you have problems connecting try temporarily disabling encryption on the router.

Secondly, it's going to depend on if you have tried any manual configuration on this card and if you have removed any such changes you made.

One of the more important ones is to go to:

system-config-network

highlight your eth1 wireless card and choose to edit its configuration, make sure it is set not to "activate when the computer starts". If it is set that way and you have to change it probably best to restart the machine before trying anything else. NetworkManager likes to have full control of the card, not share it with anything else.

I know this is dredging up an old thread, but I just wanted to sent out a thank you for the tip. I'd just installed a copy of Fedora 8 and had thought that either avahi or some update had been crashing/messing-with dhclient. It was extremely frustrating to have wireless work, and they quit for no apparent reason.

After turning off Avahi-daemon and following the advice to not have the wlan0 autostart, but use NetworkManager to start it...BINGO...Worked like a champ....Thanks again...
