Extremely slow internet browsing on debian 6

I have two computers, one running Windows 7 and the other running Debian 6. Internet browsing is extremely slow on the machine running debian, while it is normal on the machine running Windows 7, so it isn't a problem with my ISP.

IP addresses are set to DHCP while the DNS IP Addresses are static, the settings have been done using network-manager/network-manager-gnome
I am pasting the output of commands which i think will be of interest:
ping
Code:
debi@n:~$ ping www.linuxquestions.org
PING www.linuxquestions.org (75.126.162.205) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from www.linuxquestions.org (75.126.162.205): icmp_req=1 ttl=50 time=313 ms

dig

try disabling ipv6.

DebianIPv6 - Debian Wiki - http://wiki.debian.org/DebianIPv6#How_to_turn_off_IPv6

If you use Iceweasel/Firefox you will also want to disable it in about:config

Network.dns.disableIPv6 - MozillaZine Knowledge Base - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Network.dns.disableIPv6

Keep in mind some browsers are faster than others.

I would suggest using Iceweasel/Firefox or Chromium/Chrome.

Does /etc/resolv.conf show the correct nameserver ?

i disabled IPv6 in the kernel and browser (iceweasel 15) the connection is still slow.
/etc/resolv.conf shows the right DNS IP addresses

I tried browing from within a VirtualBox Guest/VM running Windows XP - IE6 (bridged network adapter), and browsing was significantly faster than it is on the Host (Debian 6).

My ethernet card is:
Code:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5764M Gigabit Ethernet PCIe (rev 10)
maybe i have the wrong drivers?

I am using a stock Debian Kernel
Code:
Linux n 2.6.32-5-686 #1 SMP Wed Jan 11 12:29:30 UTC 2012 i686 GNU/Linux
what else can i try to browse faster?
