I managed to format the drive with a live cd Linux. But I still get the same error, so if anyone has any ideas what is causing the problem then I would appreciate it.

Without knowing what commands might be available on the embedded system it's awfully hard to give help. Are there any hardware error messages logged on the embedded system when you try to mount that partition?

The only messages I get are the ones that I put at the very first post. I guess it could be something that isn't compatible with an embedded system compared to a desktop system. The only commands I have are the ones that are in Busybox.

Turns out that I forgot to use mknod to create the partitions in /dev. After I did that it worked great.

Thanks for all the advice.
