ext2 filesystem and superblock problem.

Hi all,

I have taken over responsibility for an old server running RedHat 6 that has just fallen over. (Welcome to the new job!)

I am a migrating Mac and Windoze guy who loves Linux but isn't there yet!

The server has two SCSI drives which are RAID, showing three partitions.

/dev/sda2 won't mount and e2fsck reports that it has a missing or corrupt superblock, asking if it may be a zero length partition. It then forces me into a manual fsck ckeck.

I can mount /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda3.

I know that the data is on the drive as it was working a few days ago.

At this point I am reaching the limit of my fsck knowledge and ask your help.

I think that I am correct in saying that there is a 'backup' superblock and that I need to point to it. How do I do that?

I have trief e2fsck -b 32768 /dev/sda2 but I don't seem to get anywhere.

Something fundamental I guess.

Thanks for your help.

To be sure about the backups superblock location, use "mke2fs -n ...".
Try a few of them. Else a restore sounds likely.

That (unfortunately) only proves the data was there - says nothing about it's current state.

Thanks sygOO,

Hmmmm backups.....they don't seem to have had a useful regime on that one, I think that they are looking for some sort of magic!

I will give it a try.

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether booting to a 'live DVD' of Knoppix/SuSE etc will help and then use some of the tools therein?
