Everytime I try to screen share, on both Skype and zoom my screen goes black

Hello all this is my first post. I really need help. I am trying to use both Skype and Zoom to teach but every time I try my to screen share the screen goes black. My camera works great otherwise, and it seems like the computer is running and the other person can see it. I have Ubun. 14.04 and I am running a chromebook. I have tried a few things, but I am honestly lost. Can someone please help me to figure it out, oh and I'm running precise and gnome, which from what I have read might be the problem.

From a quick search on the internet, it appears that the screen share facility isn't properly supported in Skype 4.3 for Linux (which I assume is the version you're using and which hasn't been updated in a couple of years).

Microsoft recently announced the development of a new Skype for Linux version, but it will be some time before it is properly released (the alpha version, for example, doesn't support screen sharing at all).

Your options if you want screen sharing now? Use another screen sharing facility (there are several web-based ones about), try running the latest Skype for Windows under Wine, or set up a Windows VM and run Skype in that. You may also find a Skype alternative that allows screen sharing. If you do find one, let me know.

See SKype isn't the only problem, I use Zoom as well and it does the same thing. I can screen share in SKype if its not full, just sections which sucks. I don't know how to do the vm, I tried the virtual box but I couldn't get it to work. So I am pretty lost. I would use something else but the school I work for uses this platform.

So why don't you try installing Skype for Windows under Wine or PlayOnLinux? A quick search on the internet will show you different tutorials on how to do it - pick the one that appears the clearest to you. It will take you a little work but it's worth having a go.

I've never used Zoom so can't help you with that, sorry.

In what way couldn't you get Virtual Box to work?
