i'm running xp/slack9.1, slack freshly installed, bare.i kernel. the first thing is the internet, i've ifconfiged up and down, turned off multicast, and netconfig'd until my brain felt like it was bleeding. it refuses to work. the card is an on-board PCCHiPS cheapo thing, pretty sure it's set at eth0 (i'm assuming anyway, when i ran mandrake eth0 failed at bootup but i had the internet going nontheless). also, my sound card isn't running. tried alsamixer (or whatever it's called) and turned it way up, still no dice. and finally, tried to compile my first program on the distro (stepmania) and it literally took about 10 minutes per single command. i ended up closing the terminal, it was unbearable.

pushed enter too fast.. not sure what i'm looking for in /var/log, i've got a few of them. tell me which one to post and i'll put it up.
hmmmm. well, when i run ifconfig, it only shows the loopback up and running - sometimes eth0 doesn't even come up when i up it. and i did look in /var/log, but i'm totally clueless as to what file to pull up. i'm only moderately good with the basics of this.
I had exactly the same problem using a PC Chips 810LMR mobo which had onboard ethernet. I could not configure an internet connection despite trying different distros. I tried using DHCP, I tried inputing the static IP addresses manually, but nothing worked. I fixed it by uninstalling the ethernet connection then connected via USB cable modem which worked straight away. My problem was with hdw addr, the physical (MAC) address had not been assigned. Run "ifconfig -a" to make sure your hdw addr has been assigned (a string of 12 zeros means no MAC). Regarding audio, I've had no problems with the PC Chips mobo but I don't use the onboard audio but a separate soundcard, which all distros have detected. Anyway I wish you good luck, hope you can fix it.

hahaha, i'm almost positive that's the board i'm using. what a friggen piece of crap! lucky i've got a few spare eths lying around. i'll post back what happens when i put one of em in.
on the audio, i finally got that to work, but in kde it makes horrible screeching noises when any sound plays (system sounds, anyways.. haven't tried xmms just yet, but i'm assuming i'll have the same problem), i've got a seperate card for that too, how do i switch which card the system uses? (you can see above what's installed, it's all detected, the one i'm using is the SiS one, trying to move it over to the Rockwell one, might be a problem since it's a modem/soundcard combo)
i can't believe it, i knew it was friggen cheap! on another note, mandrake 9.1 DID detect it and it worked properly.. must be a newer version or something.
regarding audio, what I did was just disable the on board AC97 sound found on the features page of AMIBIOS, then the board detects the PCI soundcard as the default device,
