easy smtp

easy is a state of mind

are you looking to learn how to configure or you want something setup?

I like postfix as a smtp server. there are many howto's on setting it up with various settings. here's a decent one: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Postfix-Cyrus-...WTO/index.html

if you want a full fledged mail server, check out zimbra.

What I'm doing is in school, my computer tech class, I wanted to set up a forum for our network. I'm playing around at home setting some up. Right now I am running Mandriva 2008 as I said, I have Xampp installed, I have phpBB forums installed. Everything works great except when you register you get an error in php for emailing. From what I've seen I need to have an smtp server to send out confirmation emails.

I just installed the postfix package on here.

this is my php.ini file

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
;SMTP = localhost

; For Win32 only.
;sendmail_from = me@localhost.com

; For Unix only. You may supply arguments as well (default: "sendmail -t -i").
sendmail_path = /usr/lib/sendmail

I'm not sure quite what to put in there.

whats the error? is postfix running? is this from your home or outside that you get the error? most dsl/cable providers block outbound smtp... there are many factors here to look at.

don't forget about your postfix configuration that you will need to do for your network in /etc/postfix/

Failed sending email :: PHP ::

DEBUG MODE

Line : 234
File : emailer.php

That's the error. How can I tell if postfix is running? It's from inside and outside my network that I get the error.

I guess I'll have to look up configuring it.

one way to see if smtp is running is to 'telnet localhost 25' and see if you get a connection. if it cannot connect then postfix is not running. redhat derivatives can also use 'service postfix status' to check the status. if its not running, try 'service postfix start'

this howto was made with mandriva in mind. if postfix won't start, check your logs and see if there are errors, most times those same errors can be google'd for a solution.
