Drivers

Why did my linux start running perfectly with the exception to my dual monitor problem(which i am assuming is not currently working b/c I am possibly using a generic driver right now?)? Was it perhaps because there is a generic set of drivers in the download of linux ubuntu?

Right -- there are a lot of generic drivers in Linux generally and in ubuntu in particular. If you want to dig a little deeper see ubuntu WIKI and ubuntu (8.04) installation guide (or the one appropriate for your version of ubuntu). Graphics cards often require specific drivers, especially if you want more than common-core functionality including dual monitors.
