I'm currently using Ubuntu 11.10 and every time I try to use compiz to spice up my desktop the screen goes black or I lose the task bar for the desktop and nothing works except cont/alt/F2 to pkill compiz.
What I am doing is installing compiz, opening the compiz manager, changing the number of desktops to 4 and enabling desktop cube, turning on animations(which none work), and that's about it.
I'm sure I missed a lot of steps or Ubuntu 11.10 just doesn't like effects. I so which version of Ubuntu does?
Thank you

Sorry for my lack of information, the video card that I am using is the visiontek radeon HD 4670 1gb DDR3 PCIe DVI/HDMI (I'm not sure about the driver), and the processor is the intel core i7-2600 3.4Ghz unlock LGA1155.
Thank you for your time

First I installed compiz manager through the Ubuntu Software Center, then I went to my applications menu and opened compiz. After I opened compiz I selected the number of desktops and changed it from 2 to 4. I then backed up and turn on the cube desktop which prompts me to turn off the desktop wall, so I do. then I turn on the animation (which none of it works). Going through the compiz manager is the only way that I know how to use compiz, because I started using linux with Knoppix using the compiz manager is the only was that I know how to use the desktop graphics and eye candy. But because each system is different I am sure that I am missing a lot of steps. Would you please walk me through it?
Thank you for your time

P.S I answered this from my laptop(which is using windows ) and I missed a step on getting to the number of desktop switching.
The screen losses the task bar on the upper part of the screen and the dock on the left hand side of the screen after I close compiz manager. So then I pkill compiz by ctrl/alt/f2 to get to the terminal screen, and they come back. It's when I start a new session that the screen is black, I have to pkill compiz again after I sign in. Again the desktop acts weird, more detail, the mouse hitches across the screen instead of gliding across and sometimes the screen will freeze not allowing any G.U.I. I have to restart the session for the desktop to act right. At this point after signing in the desktop just doesn't work anymore, more detail there's no task bar or dock and the mouse is gone. So to fix what I did I install the Ubuntu 11.10 the dvd and remove all the settings that I did, by reinstalling Ubuntu. So right now all that I have done is install compiz and then asked for help, I figured I was doing something very wrong. I looked up on how to do it on youtube, but there were no really good directions this is the best one that I found and it doesn't behave the way mine does, I think it's because the guy is using a different video card http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=...=0&FORM=LKVR12
