do I have a modem

I am trying some things that require a modem, fax, ppp. I have a modem port and suppose to have Linmodem. I have the Intel ICH chipset and slmodem driver.
This is what I am suppose to have. But I cannot find any way to verify that this is what I have, i.e. do I even have a modem? I tried to do a simple dialout to a regular phone number but could not even find a way to achieve this.
I have a FC4 system, laptop. Is there a step by step tutorial that can help me set up the modem, verify it is working and set up fax and ppp?
My boss requires I be able to send and receive faxes as well as dial up to the company's system so I can be in touch when not at work.

Try using lspci (it might be /sbin/lspci depending on your distro). From there you should be able to determine if a modem is indeed installed and what chipset it uses. Even if it's not installed, I believe the hardware will still identify itself as something.

Alternatively, you could fork out a $10-$15 US for an external hardware modem (uses the serial port) which will work on any linux...
