Question Cut and paste is not working.

Hey, I'm using Kubuntu 8.10 and from last week I can not cut/copy and paste using gui. When I click on cut/copy buttons it does not enable the paste button(in the context menu which i get when right clicked on a file)

Terminal cp command is working and I can copy/paste texts. And I can drag and drop files too. But It is a pain without regular cut and copy.

Any solution for this please.

Thanks

Hi, welcome to LQ!

Please make it a habit to be specific in what
you're talking/asking about; seeing your thread
title I assumed you can't copy & paste text between
apps .. only towards the end it becomes clear that
you're talking about a GUI file-manager. It would
be important to know which one you're using, and
from which location to which new location you're
trying to copy.

Cheers,
Tink

kasunbg:

I suppose you are using Thunar of Kfce. Try use Cut & Paste using "the same window", browse to the dir to paste to, if it works fine, I had that issue before.

If not, check the file permissions you're working on.

Sorry for not being specific
I tried using dolphin and konquerer. Both acts same. I'm trying to copy files in my home folder and I have rights to do that.(I can copy same file to same location using terminal but it is easy if I have GUI).

Thanks

What *is* the target location? What do you see in a terminal (or in ~/.xsession-errors) when
you fire konqueror up in a konsole? Does it give you any hints/errors?

I tried several places.say , for example from /home/Kasun/ to /home/Documents.
And the same thing can be done without causing error using cp command.

Here's what I get when I fire konquerer and dolphin. I couldn't understand it much.

Code:
Kasun@kasun~cse:~$ konqueror
konqueror(5541) KonqViewManager::setCurrentProfile: "webbrowsing" localPath= "/home/Kasun/.kde/share/apps/konqueror/profiles/webbrowsing"
konqueror(5541) KHTMLView::focusNextPrevChild: focusNode.name:  "a"
Object::connect: No such signal DolphinView::redirection(KUrl,KUrl)
konqueror(5541) KParts::BrowserExtension::slotSetActionText: BrowserExtension::slotSetActionText  paste   "Paste"
konqueror(5541) KParts::BrowserExtension::slotSetActionText: BrowserExtension::slotSetActionText  paste   "Paste"
konqueror(5541) KonqClosedWindowsManager::removeClosedItemsConfigFiles: "/tmp/kde-Kasun/closeditems/"
Kasun@kasun~cse:~$
Kasun@kasun~cse:~$ dolphin
Kasun@kasun~cse:~$
The following is the line generated when I click on copy

Code:
konqueror(5541) KParts::BrowserExtension::slotSetActionText: BrowserExtension::slotSetActionText  paste   "Paste"
I can not paste anywhere as my paste button is not enabled. I pressed Ctrl+V, but that also doesn't work nor show any errors.

This is the section in ~/.xsession-errors that is related to the loading konquerer-> go to ~/Documents folder-> click on copy by right clicking a file(or Ctrl+C).

Code:

And for further detail, I recently changed my hostname by editing /etc/hostname and /etc/hosts files. Is it related with this? I think it's not, but just mentioned.

A help will be much appreciated. Thanks for your concern.

This all doesn't reveal too much I'm afraid. Try creating a new users,
and see how that behaves. If the copy & paste works there it's maybe
some setting you accidentally changed.
