Create file icon on the Desktop from Leafpad

Using Kali Linux with Gnome 3.30.2

Leafpad is not creating file icons.

Installed gnome-tweak-tool 3.34.0-2

How do I update gnome to 3.4?

icon?

do you mean a .desktop file ?

these are just simple files which contain metadata

cat ~/Desktop/terminator.desktop
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Type=Link
Name=Terminator
Icon=terminator
URL=/usr/share/applications/terminator.desktop
cat /usr/share/applications/terminator.desktop
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Terminator
Name[af]=Terminator
Name[ar]=المتطرف
<snip>
Comment=Multiple terminals in one window
Comment[af]=Veelvuldige terminale in een venster
Comment[ar]=العديد من الطرفيات في نافذة واحدة
<snip>
TryExec=terminator
Exec=terminator
Icon=terminator
Type=Application
Categories=GNOME;GTK;Utility;TerminalEmulator;System;
StartupNotify=true
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=terminator
X-Ayatana-Desktop-Shortcuts=NewWindow;
Keywords=terminal;shell;prompt;command;commandline;
[NewWindow Shortcut Group]
Name=Open a New Window
Exec=terminator
TargetEnvironment=Unity
you are going to have to give more detail on what you actually want to copy to your thumbdrive

GNOME 3 aims to provide a single interface for desktop computers and tablet computers. This means using only input techniques that work on all those devices, requiring abandonment of certain concepts to which desktop users were accustomed, such as right-clicking, or saving files on the desktop.

I updated gnome and it removed my ability to drag and drop icons.

well, if the "Gnome Desktop" is no longer the ~/Desktop dir I'm not sure what you can do.

you should probably install a real distro and not try to use a specialised penetration testing distro.

Well at least chatting / sharing posts has clarified it is a Gnome 3 thing.

this: GNOME 3 aims to provide a single interface for desktop computers and tablet computers. This means using only input techniques that work on all those devices, requiring abandonment of certain concepts to which desktop users were accustomed, such as right-clicking, or saving files on the desktop.

is absolutely edifying.

If I teach CySA+ again, i'll have handouts ready for my VirtualBox/Kali students on how to move files to the USB drive via CLI.

Was nice to have them use drag and drop in my August class. I tried to limit the scope of Linux skills to the bare minimum so they could focus on passing the CompTIA CySA exam.

I finish my WYWM Pentest course in 2 weeks and should pass CompTIA Pentest+ about the same time. I have an expiring voucher for CASP so maybe that, then finally Linux+.

I heard gnome 3.4 is out? I'll figure out how to do a gnome update, since gnome extensions doesn't seem to include the show desktop icons toggle anymore.

Not having desktop icons does not mean that you cannot use drag'n'drop.
As a teacher, you should know that much.

But who am I kidding: just another dissatisfied "customer" whose mind is already set no matter what I say...
