Angry Complete linux falty update

A few days ago I received a message that a new important download was available, so I downloaded it.
Next I tried to log on to my bank, but A reply said that the bank did not recognize my computer so it failed. This bank will not let one use another computer. When I checked up I discovered that the download had deleted all cookies ( I use Opera ). Also nothing else works properly and it just keeps locking up with most things I use. Also Libra office rarely ever worked properly and Firefox locks up constantly and always has. I use 20.1 version. Previously I used 18 and earlier versions, they worked well. So should I delete 20.1 and reinstall Or what else could I do ? My computer is only partly working so it is almost useless,

Brian

Hi, and welcome here, at LQ

Actually hard to say anything, would be nice to know what was that important download. Otherwise yes, you can delete your OS and reinstall if you wish.

A few days ago I received a message that a new important download was available, so I downloaded it.

Why?
Did you check if the originator of the message was trustworthy and definitely who they claimed to be?
DO NOT log on to your Bank.
Wipe your disk and reinstall.
Then change your Bank passwords.

Was it an email?

Thanks for your reply, I think maybe it was not genuine so have removed all files from computer. After this hapenned I received a message from Yahoo mail, which invited me to sign up to a new security program in which they said I could enter all my pass words so as they would be safe and easy to use. They offered a three month trial period for free. This was obviously a scam so I have informed Yahoo.

Therefore I have closed the computer down and will down load it again. On windows you can go back in time to a former state the computer was in
which should rectify this sort of thing. I do not see any way that can be dne on Ubunto. Pity

Thanks you guys for your input

Regards

If you have a full backup, prior to the suspect install, you could restore that.
Since its a suspect download, you can't expect it to play well with "restore to former state" software.

Depending on your OS, Linux does provide similar software.
For example, Mint provides this kind of thing - but once you install malware, it can bypass any such restore feature.

Sorry, but there are ample ways to do this in Linux.
