Cant Exit Xwindows to install Nvidia Driver

Im running SUSE 9.0. I read somewhere Ctrl + Alt + F2 or Ctrl + Alt + F1 takes you out of xwindows. i tried those and the nvidia install says im still running xwindows. I tried to Kill the X process but that just restarts Xwindow. Can anyone help me? Ive tried the net and my linux book is pretty old and isnt geared torwards SUSE.

[ctrl][alt][f#] will take you out of Xwindows, but as you've found out, it's still running. When you boot straight to the GUI, the X-server gets set-up to re-run anytime it gets killed.

You can either set your system to boot to runlevel 3, in /etc/inittab, or run "telinit 3" as root. When you've installed the drivers, reset /etc/inittab, if you went that way, or "telinit 5".
