Have you installed the HPLIP drivers from HP. If not install them and follow the setup instructions.

I didn't want to use a sourceforge download; but rather a debian.
I did sudo apt-get --reinstall install hplip
and still got no printing.
I then did sudo apt-get --reinstall install lprng
with:

hebrews:~$ lpq
Printer: lp1@hebrews 'HP OfficeJet 5500'
Queue: 1 printable job
Server: pid 3991 active
Unspooler: pid 3992 active
Status: cannot open '/dev/usb/lp0' - 'Device or resource busy', attempt 1, sleeping 10 at 20:32:53.649
