I just installed Suse 9.3 64 bit and the install went seamlessly. After configuring hardware, downloading updates, installing them, creating root password plus user account with username and password [and VERY carefully writing down the passwords in large black marker!]........I go to login at a console prompt [not sure why I am not getting X login] and it keeps saying login failed - regardless of whether I input the username and password, or if I type 'root', and then the root password.
If someone could help it would be great to use this new OS!
so init1 would go after login? after the : somewhere else...?
Another odd thing: I have the 64 bit 9.3 live dvd, and suddenly it too boots to the same text screen [albeit a text screen with a lovely picture for a background].....
When I'm a little clearer on how to insert init1 I'll try it, otherwise I may go to bed and redo the network download, and not bother making any passwords. It still might not matter, if the computer is going to be flaky anyway
Thanks for the suggestion, just need to get clear on where I find the initial grub boot menu and grub kernel command line. It boots by spilling a lot of text on the screen and is there a point where I need to be pausing it to insert init1?
Thanks I hope if I ever run into this jam again I will be able to pull a working solution out of the fix-lost-suse-password folder [or rather, the password-dissed-by-computer folder]........I won't tell anyone that I ended up botching the partition table and am now running Fedora Core 4 64 on that particular drive.....no matter, I still have 400gig of remaining drive space in which to install plenty of distros within VMWare, running inside a 64 bit Windows raid volume.
Thanks to those who helped, it won't surprise me if this is symptomatic of something buggy within suse 9.3 64, since as I said, I was quite meticulous in recording the passwords accurately, safely, and legibly.
