Cannot login on console

I have inherited a linux box (mandriva/mandrake) where I cannot login on the console. When I enter the username (normal user or root) and hit the enter key, the login prompts returns without even asking for a password.

Since I can ssh remotely, I tried to look for logs which may throw some light on this issue, but I didn't find anything.

Any pointers on this issue would be very helpful.

I don't know why you would want to run someone else's installation. Who knows what problems you've also inherited! It would be better if you did a fresh install. Does the prompt change? It could be passwords are been disabled.
