Cannot login after changes in boot.local file

Hello,

I am new to Linux and using Suse 10. I edited the boot.local and profile.local files to include some environmental parameters. Once I restarted the computer, it does not let me login. When I enter my login/password in the GUI, it brings the same login screen again. I tried to edit the files on console to remove the changes but some how Suse does not let me edit the files using vi or vim editors. It gives the error, file not found.

Here is the change that I made to profile.local

PATH=$SHIB_HOME:/opt/shibboleth-idp

and boot.local files

export SHIB_HOME=/opt/shibboleth-idp

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's your problem.

It SHOULD say
PATH=$PATH:/opt/shibboleth-idp

Now the only programs your machine can find are in /opt/shibboleth-idp
which would also explain that it cannot find vi or vim.

Try to use the full path to your editor, e.g.
/usr/bin/vim for editing your profile.local

Cheers,
Tink
