Continued: If everything looks clear do what Tinkster recommended in post #2. Or use Debian-specific dpkg-reconfigure command. Look in /etc/X11 and see if there is xorg backup file. Things like that. Use your creativity. Happy hacking.

If your source.list is empty put something in there! And leave Gnome alone, it runs on X. You are at CLI now, enjoying fixing your Debian.
