Can you image without USB/DVD?

I have feeling I already know the answer to this question but I just want to make sure I have covered all avenues before I give up.

I installed Ubuntu onto a different partition on my hard drive to make a mutliboot so I can mess around with Ubuntu and see if I like using it. The version I installed from a DVD or possibly CD was really old, version 16.04. I wanted to use the Internet to download the latest Ubuntu LTS version, but I couldn't connect to the Internet.

After some thought, I realized the reason it probably didn't work was because it didn't have the drivers for my much more recently released router. I tried to look for the driver installation DVD, but after looking I'm sure I threw it out (I'm currently in a A+ class learning that was a stupid thing to do).

Is there a way to take the image of the most recent Ubuntu LTS I have on my Windows partition and install it on my current Ubuntu installation without using a USB drive or installation media? Assuming I can't, does anyone know of a way I can get a copy of my Netgear router driver from my Window partition to the Ubuntu partition and install it? I don't really have another USB thumbdrive to put another Ubuntu installation on.

Sorry for the long & probably confusing post, but I would appreciate any kind of help I can get. Thanks.

Hardware will needed that you probably don't have.

External linux computer .

Or just live with it till you get a usb drive or external dvd drive. KISS.

This is linux - anything is possible. What's your pain thresh-hold ?.
What's your comfort level with CLI and sundry utilities ?.

If you have the iso already downloaded, simply copy it across to your linux partition - do it from Ubuntu, the GUI filemanager should be fine. First step would be to boot it in live mode so you can check out it all works ok on your hardware - especially that wifi. You don't need a driver for the router, but you probably need an updated wifi client that supports newer security APIs - the latest iso should have all that in place. You'll need to note the location you copy the iso to and then have a read of this to get an idea of what's required to boot it from the grub command interface. Check out the commands at the Menuentry section, then note the section "Booting without a GRUB Menuentry". Once you've checked things out you can think about installing it from the live session - very likely you'll have to repartition first to make sure you don;t over-write the iso before you've finished using it.

Should be educational.

- I believe you can't the driver might be an INF or DLL which Linux might not recognized

- Haven't tried this and don't try also if you are not clear exactly of what you are doing.
- How did you install the old Ubuntu 16? Just an idea, get a new Ubuntu installer, do exactly on how you installed Ubuntu 16 then on the installation part where it ask you where to install then just overwrite or clear the space of Ubuntu 16
- Make sure you choose the right partition or else you might end up erasing you drive

Take a look at this link, it sounds familiar with what you want to achieve.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1247...l-boot-desktop

Actually, if you have a Windows 10 ISO same version of what you are using. If you don't have any important files at all. Now if you messed up the drive, you can always install Windows using the Win 10 ISO as long as it's the same version with the original installation.

What I mean if you are using Win Home version the use Home version to reinstall, if you were using Pro then use the Pro ISO
It will automatically activate, since Windows Product key is on the BIOS of the laptop assuming your laptop is one of the newer models.

In this way, you don't worry messing up your laptop. Of course take care of your important files.

And by the way, have you tried Virtual Box instead of dual booting?

Are you using Windows Hyper-V for this?

I'm assuming the OP has downloaded the latest Ubuntu iso (image) to Win NTFS - just goes to show how precise everyone has to be with language.
Hopefully the OP will clarify.

As posted you do not need a driver for the router. You do need a driver for the ethernet or wireless adapter and some adapters need special firmware.

We need to know the make amd model number of your computer and the output of the lspci command for just the wireless and wired adapters. You can try using an ethernet adapter which may just work and you can download the necessary wireless drivers.

Otherwise we need more information about the hardware and how it is connected. While this would be a good exercise Ubuntu has changed a bit from version 16 to the latest including security patches and would suggest installing a newer version.

Unless your router is physically driven by the PC (The great majority are stand-alone and only connected by the LAN/WIFI to the PC) then having a driver on the PC is not required. Most also have a web interface when you connect to the router's IP from the LAN that allow management. I think this is likely a needless concern.

Can use network. Clonezilla and other programs let you move stuff across network.

I borrowed a USB drive from my teacher and installed a much more recent version off of it, so problem solved. Thanks for the advice anyways.
