Can I access internet with Agere AC'97 Modem, RH 9.0, on IBM A31 Laptop?

I haven't been able to get on internet with this setup. Message in wizard is that "modem is busy." I saw one thread that suggested I need to direct KPPP to a different port but I don't know how to do this. If I need to download a driver, how can I do this when I can't get on line in first place.

Thanks for help.
