your sound modules are definitely not installed. "lsmod" shows the loaded modules (drivers).

sound support is installed by default
UNLESS
This is a laptop that requires a Microsoft only driver .
If a laptop RHEL/CentOS/SL was never designed for laptops and not everything might work .
The sound and the mousepad and the graphics might not work with rhel on laptops

-- assuming cent5.6 ?????? or is this CentOS 6.0 ---
on a desktop computer , alsa is used by default - no different third party driver is needed

installed by default on the desktop install
type in
Code:
alsamixer
that will pop up a text based tool

very normal RHEL/CentOS/SL were DESIGNED for a server with NO GUI
it was DESIGNED not to play videos on
it was DESIGNED not to listen to music on
by default MOST videos music do not have any support

now you can add rpmfusion and rmpforge and install the good, bad, and ugly plugins
and install VLC
and install Mplayer

but you can VERY VERY easily 100% mess up ( FUBAR) the install VERY VERY VERY FAST
if you are not VERY VERY VERY careful
please read the wiki
