can't start gui ubuntu 9.10

I was learning to create users and change passwords, when, after a few changes i restarted but now there's a message: could not update ICEauthority /var/lib/gdm/.ICEauthority

I have restarted in safemode, switched to root and did startx but also no success but a different error message

I have tried a solution suggested in different forum but no luck so far.
This is what i tried:

-------------------------------------------------------------------
from root directory: sudo vi /etc/gmd/custom.conf
there you should see
Code:

[daemon]
TimedLoginEnable=false
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
TimedLogin=mazlik
AutomaticLogin=mazlik
TimedLoginDelay=30

and just change the "true" in the second row to "false"
--------------------------------------------------------------

Extra info:
when i installed ubuntu i 've chosen to automatically log in.
I'm running this on a virtual machine.

Can anyone help?

By the way, i have been working on a script for shool for 2 days now en guess what it's on that virtual machine.
I have to deliver it tommorrow so if i can't get in today i am screwed

Another way i am thinking of is to copy the scriptfile i need to another virtual machine.
If i can do that i won't have to solve this problem.

But i don't know how to do that either so if anyone knows how to manage that i will be very greatfull.

Im' gonna try this now and hope i will succeed.

Update:

Have tried to do this: scp [filename] [ipadress other machine]:/home/$user
If i execute following msg is shown:
ssh: connect to host 192.168.0.195 port 22: Connection refused
lost connection

I can do a successfull ping
I did change firewall rules on both machines like this : ufw allow 22

Update:

ok i've managed to transfer the file successfully with a ssh conection.

For now i'm good, but if anyone knows the answer on the original error please let me know.
I can don't really need it anymore because i can dispose the broken virtual machine.

But i like to know what caused it , because i am sure it was caused by something i did wrong.
