Can't get jdirect printer to work

Had rh7.2, now 8.0. I cannot get any print capability to the networked jdirect lj4 printer. I use the printer configuration tool, answer the questions, restart lpd successful, go to print a test page and instantly get back a "There was an error trying to print to test page." It seems straight forwad enough to setup but for the life of I can't make it work. I can ping the jetdirect device so I know i have connectivity and there are a variety of other devices, hp unix boxes and pc printing to it.

Any help to get me off square one would be appreciated.

Ciao,
Rick

Actually I did get it fixed. Figured it for myself.

I needed to have the localhost loopback 127.0.0.1 defined in my /etc/hosts file and that was all there was to it.

Hope this helps,
Rick

I did also have a problem with the localhost loopback. If any super_newb (like me) runs into this thread in the future I suggest the following pedantic advice:
a) edit the first line of /etc/hosts to contain:
>127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
b) restart the network services type at a prompt
>service network restart
c) go to your kicker (point and click stuff) and choose CUPS printer configuration or open a browser and type
http://localhost:631/

if that does not work I can give more advice:
Redhat 7.3 and 8.0 did not ship CUPS in the latest form and it may not be running and/or installed on your machine. So, you may need to update some stuff - but that's okay because there is a great point and click way to do this open a shell and type up2date. you may first need to register with redhat up2date service which is easy to do. Then run up2date and make sure you check to include the latest cups stuff. as an aside it is good to run up2date occasionally anyway.
