Can't connect to internet

Hi all,

Yesterday I managed to get my alcatel adsl modem up and running under mandrake 9. After installing mozilla I was able to surf around etc.. Today when I tried it wouldn't connect, I went into the command centre and did everything again but no joy, I know the modem is working and connected because I rebooted under win2k and it works fine.. does anyone have any hints on what could be wrong, I didn't touch anything after connecting the first time so I'm not sure what caused it to stop working?

Thanks in advance.
Shaun

Check:

1. Check if you can reach a website based on a IP address first. So instead of www.address.com you'll enter 234.43.2bla.bla in the address bar. (If that works edit /etc/resolv.conf and add a valid dns)
2. Open a terminal and type route (as root) it should contain a valid default route using the interface connected with the Internet.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the info but unfortunately it didn't help any.
What I have noticed is that it says that pppoe is usually the norm for adsl connections so I tried it but it still didn't work, it doesn't even seem to be sending any bytes when I look in the network monitor.

When I initially connected (the first time when it worked) I chose the alcaltel_adsl or something like that over the pppoe. I've looked at the help pages on my ISPs' site and it says that it uses pppoA but I don't have that option when going through the configuration screens, is there a way to install this?

Thanks
Shaun

Under the config wizard for mandrake, it should have an option for alcatel configuration (presuming that it is an alcatel speedtouch usb model - I had the old turquoise cowpat one, but understand that the maroon mouse shape one - the speedtouch 330?? - should work as well).

Erm, also, when I was still using mine, I could often get it configured, use it and when I booted back and forth, it wouldn't play under mandrake - this turned out to be to do with firewalls, "shorewall" specifically. I ended up turning it off, and that cured the problem.

I have also seen various threads that have said, that it doesn't like it if you are trying to start it and stop it, using the graphic facilities (I did OK with the network facility though), these other threads mention using command "Start ADSL" or "Stop ADSL" - though you'd have to mess around with upper and lower case, as I can't remember - also, if you do a search for speedtouch or alcatel usb or adsl modems here at LQ, you should get quite a few threads that may be of some assistance, and guide you in the right direction.

regards

John

p.s. I now use a SAR110 because I used to get rather pissed off waiting for the modem to initialise and disconnect between OS's - and if you do the search you should find a thread that mentions the snag with the "speedtouch.sh" file - I never did find a solution to that.

Thanks for all the help guys, eventually I messed up so many files by trying different things taken from different sites that I've reinstalled, configured the modem at intallation and it all works a treat!
