Buffer I/O error on device sdc1

Hi,

I have an external Hard drive connected to my Ubuntu 12.04 machine via USB.

This morning, I saw some messages on the monitor as follows:

Buffer I/O error on device sdc1, logical block 50132671
[... and more]

This is not the first time I have seen this message. The first time I saw these messages, I quickly detached it from my Ubuntu machine and hooked it up to my laptop running on Win 7 Pro so that I could run the "error-checking" tools over it. It's a big volume disk so it took more than half a day to finish the checking and the result was good.

So I'm puzzled as to why I still receive these messages from Ubuntu.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I guess it depends how good the Win tools are.
Have you tried http://linux.die.net/man/8/smartctl & http://linux.die.net/man/8/smartd

I googled the error messages and found the link http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...e-sdb1-786615/

As per the link the disk may be dying
