boot problem

hi
I tried to update RH 9 kernel 2.4.20-8 to 2.6.1 but it failed on boot with message kernel panic: no init found. try passing init= option to kernel.
I was following this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...355#post379355

I think i was following the same steps but in my system there are /usr/src/linux-2.4.20-8 and /usr/src/kernel-2.6.1 what i want to do is to test the kernel 2.6.1 and keep the old kernel , that means i want to choose which kernel i use on boot.
the thread didn't show me how to configure with 2 kernels and the new kernel failed on boot.
I tried to use the installation CD to boot, the upgrade was successful but the boot still failed with same error message. I didn't have boot disk with me as well.
is there a way to boot up my system again?

thanks

well when i wrote that howto, i took into assumption (maybe a bad idea) that the user would leave the other kernel there ... thats why i referenced below the editing of grub/lilo to refer to how the other kernel entry is, to make the new entry, assuming you'd leave the first one ...
and by what your saying, or you implying that the rescue disk doesn't work?
