Boot hangs with 2.4.18 and 2.4.19 kernel

When booting the kernel to start an installation CD, the boot hangs with 2.4.18 and 2.4.19 kernels, with the messages:

Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2
ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
SIS5513: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 09
PCI: Assigned IRQ 14 for device 00:01.1
SIS5513: chipset revision 208
SIS5513: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
SiS5597:
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xd000-0xd007, BIOS settings: hda: DMA, hdb: DMA
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xd008-0xd00f, BIOS settings: hdc: pio, hdd: DMA
hda: QUANTUM FIREBALL EX3.2A ATA DISK drive
hdb: Seagate Technology 1275MB - ST31276A, ATA DISK drive
hdd: CD-532E-A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15
This part bothers me.

However the 2.4.20 kernel on the SUsE 8.1 Installation CD works, and the boot message shows the same.

I really don't understand . Is it me ( silly me) or do I need some know-how ( )? I'm just using a debian 2.2.20 at the moment.

Pri Master: QUANTUM FIREBALL EX3.2A ATA DISK drive
Pri Slave: Seagate Technology 1275MB - ST31276A, ATA DISK drive
Sec Slave: CD-532E-A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
Motherboard: ASUS ???
Processor: 166MHz Intel Pentium MMX i386

Thank you!

"I really don't understand "

Neither do I. I have:
SIS5513
/dev/hda is Seagate 120Gig ST3120026A
/dev/hdd is CD-RW
kernel 2.4.22

and I have no problems.

I can only guess at what your problem might be. My first guess is that the kernel has to recognize your hdd, CD-532E-A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM, drive as two distinct addresses. If so then maybe the older kernels don't do that very well. If you have a CD-ROM or CD-RW available try switching that for the CD/DVD-ROM and see if that works.
