audio problems after updating . .

I updated my suse 10 to with its sp2 . After updating now there is no output through headset or input . i tested the same headset in my other OS ubuntu and it works fine.
1) in Kmix there is no "mic, headset options"
2) I then reupdated alsa driver with sp2 dvd. But no improvement.
3) Only two options are displayed in Kmix -- "Master ,Pcm " only
4) but there is output through speaker
Note:
1) If i have to install any driver or update anything give me the details and links available.
2) If it can be "repaired" using SP2 dvd then how to repair?
(i have not repaired a linux system before. Pl tell me step by step procedure to solve my problem)
3) I hv many third party software installed and running projects in that. So will reinstalltion cause my softwares to be erased?)

Problems encountered:
1) First when i updated online i am unable to boot.(details regarding have been posted by me already. pl see "see all posts by kavinchat"
2) After resolving the booting problem "Java platform was not found and 'netbeans' denied to run. so i installed ibm java from sp2 dvd and it runs now.("sun java plugin founds missing even i repeatedly installed")

--------- give me a solution --------

A headset option yes there is kmix>show mixer window switches>head phone output
There is also MIC kmix>show mixer window>MIC
Where did you install the third party software ?
But let see if you use that option if you get sound through you're head phone
