Unhappy Audacity 1.3.5-2 can't "Start Monitor" using AT-LP2D USB turntable and Ubuntu 8.1

Trying to convert LPs to digital.
Sony Vaio laptop, 1.125G RAM
Ubuntu 8.10
Audacity 1.3.5-2 (synaptic says it's current)
Audio-Technica LP2D USB turntable.

Same hardware worked in XP (pyro instead of audacity).
Turntable and Audacity work on Mac Leopard.

The "Start Monitor" never starts.

If I skip the USB and use the phono/line out into the mic input on the laptop it works but, phono setting produces too low of a signal and line setting is way too high of a setting (everything clips) and both are noisy.

The input setting is showing USB audio codec so something is working (if the turntable is not attached the USB audio codec is not available).

I've read where starting the turntable before booting machine has worked for some, but not me.

If I just click RECORD, it shows an error message about checking the settings and the sample rate. I've tried all the available sample rates and the settings match what the manual that came with the turntable show (comparable Mac settings).

TIA,
Michael

Smile Found it, minor configuration, check box.

While doing more searching, I found: <http://www.xaprb.com/blog/2008/08/30/how-to-digitize-records-with-ubuntu-a-usb-turntable-and-audacity/>
an interesting in-depth article.
I unchecked the "allow play-through while recording" and that fixed it!
Duh! I can't listen while recording but it otherwise works. I should be able to connect the phono/line out to speakers and listen that way, if I need to.

Thanks to all who read, there were no replies but people thought about it.
Thanks.

Hope this helps someone later.
