Apt-get problem

Any idea what this means and how to fix it? :

[root@localhost matt]# apt-get autoclean
Segmentation fault
[root@localhost matt]# apt-get clean
[root@localhost matt]# apt-get install mplayer
Segmentation fault
[root@localhost matt]#

Help appreciated!

apt broken
did you compile it with a bunch of crazy compiler flags or something
or possibly it's a binary for the wrong type of machine ?????

I dont know what you mean by crazy compiler flags, because I didnt mess with anything. I'm working on a brand new Fedora Core 2 installation. And APT worked fine when I did apt-get update and apt-get check and apt-get upgrade.
So I dont really understand why I am running into problems now. Is this a problem I can fix?

Ok, well now even apt-get update doesnt want to work. Coming up with Segmentation fault. This really doesnt make any sense to me, because it worked the very first time I ran it:

Do I have to first remove/ uninstall anything first? If I have to, how do I do that? Or, does reinstalling apt-get simply fix everything?

Same problem on Ubuntu Hardy. No response in the Ubuntu forums yet. Looks like nobody knows. I hope that changes. using dpkg is tiresome for upgrades
