application startup problem

Hi all,
I just finished configuring gnome on slackware. I have a peculiar problem. I installed firefox, mplayer and gaim packages (from linuxpackages.net) but they dont start. I've looked for log messages but I cant seem to find them. When i start the binary...I can see the application running in system monitor but I dont see it on screen.

Although if I start the apps as root, I can see them...Is this the problem with export display for regular user??? or a permissions problem???

Any help would be greatly appreciated...thanks tux

Do you try to run them using console or a icon thing, ive had a sim problem but fixed it by starting things in console, most of the time you just cd the programs folder and type ./theprograms name. Please post a little more infomation.

no matter where i start it...console or x. If I start apps in console...the programs seems to run it but it doesnt open up any windows...no error messages. I just terminate them. Now let me tell you this...I have installed bluefish package the same way and i can run it very well...but not mplayer, firefox or gaim.

interesting...no .xsession-errors file. Might be a problem with my .xsession file since i created by hand. It has only the following line

xhost +localhost

That explains why your .xsession "works" ;)
despite its brevity.

It's not being used.

Okay I just logged via a graphical login...apparently I am getting this error in my .xsession-error file

stderr is not a tty - where are you?
SESSION_MANAGER=local/mn:/tmp/.ICE-unix/1797

then i tried to run firefox to see what errors get registered in .xsession-error.

apparently when i terminated the program...it printed out in .xsession-error file...here it is

/usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/run-mozilla.sh: line 451: 1961 Terminated "$prog" ${1+"$@"}

Now, I am pretty new to Slackware so please help me with this...

Thanks, Tux...
