installing apache is pretty easy. This is what I do. I put the source code in /usr/src, uncompress -> gunzip apache-2.x.x.tar.gz, extract -> tar -xf apache 2.x.x.tar. go into the apache dir that was created. There are some files called README and INSTALL. Read all of those. It gives you a better understanding of how apache gets compiled and installed. I think the error is from ./configure. you need to tell ./configure what dir your going to put apache in:
./configure prefix=PREFIX. I think thats how it goes, check the INSTALL/README but PREFIX is supposed to be where apache will be ie ./configure prefix=/usr then: make and: make install..
