error installing php on debian with apache

Hi everyone,

i'm using debian/gnome etch and have included webserver(apache) in the installation.

trying to install php 5.2.4
via unpacking tar

error :

checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH

what's gcc/cc, do i have it and just can't find it, can i find it on the debian/gnome installation cd?

on a further note, is there anyway i can use apt to install from cd, ... and does anyone know which of the 21 cd images hold installation packages for LAMP setup?

gcc is the GnuCompilerCollection. you better run apt-get install as superuser
sudo apt-get install gcc
sudo apt-get install bison
sudo apt-get install flex
sudo apt-get install binutils

the latter will probably useful in the long run...

okay thanks guys... i deviated temporarily because i really needed to run LAMP, so i used XAMPP on a diff. linux installation...

i hope i can get the gcc package from the debian etch cd (gnome default)
because i tried installing gcc from a .deb and it didn't quite work out

i got something like checking if gcc is running .... no.

once again, thanks guys
