I'm not a geek computer user. I don't use a computer for work. I like to double click and go. And I like it when I do such for it to look cool which I haven't found with using Linux yet. I have no knowledge of what Linux is or what it's capable ( reason why I'm asking ) I have zero interest in terminals use. Surfing the web is mainly all I use a computer. I don't want to customize a system if possible. I would like if possible something that resemble the windows system looks from installment but if that is complaining maybe you're right.

Have a look at which Windows version/ “look” you require (6m 22s onwards) on this customisation video:

If none of those custom options suits your purposes then maybe you should stick with Microsoft.
Thanks for this it's not bad maybe once I understand Linux I will give that a try, much appreciated.

The icons are just a downloadable theme. So maybe find a theme you like.

Both Deepin and Elementary are trying to look and feel like Mac. Also try the Gnome desktop. KDE Plasma has icon animation, etc.

As some others mentioned. The desktop (gui) is separate from the distro. So you can actually install and try many different desktops on the same distro. Just log out and select a different one before logging in again.

Again, thank you for that but no offense what you said about Gnome, KDE Plasma, gui is like your speaking a foreign language to me. I'm a older person with limited knowledge of computers and zero knowledge with Linux. I was told for what I use a computer I could use Linux since it free and just the basic installment would serve my needs.

Thats fine neither did I when I started. However I'd like to know. Do you have time to tinker with Linux? If you have time it's easy to learn.

As far as meeting your needs. Almost every distro can surf the web "out of the box" They just might take a little tweaking to make the icons look "Right"

Perhaps you cannot see it, but you really are making life far more difficult for yourself by adding unnecessary “looks” restrictions when you basically just want to surf the net using a web browser such as Firefox.

My advice would be to install Linux Mint 19.2 MATE which has the W7-style expanding menus and just USE the computer’s web browser to surf the net, which is your main priority.

I have all the time in the world I'm retired. Though, I'm the outdoor type of person. I like being outside as much as possible, working with my hands and talking to people face to face. I could never do those chatting things which you younger folks do. I have tried Mint and I don't like how it looks. Maybe I'm just asking something that too much of a bother. I just thought to ask and not to offend anyone, thanks

Have you tried the KDE desktop? Configurable like you wouldn't believe. Everything in the attached screen capture is configurable.

Out of the box there are probably a half-dozen sets of icons to choose from. And more can be found online. Surely something is out there. You'll just have to hunt it down.

Happy hunting...

I myself, like being outside. In fact my job requires me to be outside.(Computers is a spare time hobby for me) I hate social platforms. If somebody needs to tell me something they have my number... While I am "younger" a lot of users on this site are not. You'd be amazed how many of them are older than you.

Back to the subject. If you have time, there isn't much that you can't figure out. The best thing is you now have a goal(To make Linux look like Windows). Start researching what you need to make that happen. You might benefit from the first link in my signature.

There are many tutorials online for installing and switching the icons. Some other users have linked themes that have the look you want. All you need to do is figure out which desktop environments support them. I think Cinnamon or Gnome should. Then figure out how to install them. Usually all it takes is extracting files to a certain location. If you have problems along the way, you can always ask here.

You can choose from a selection of themes, icon styles & fonts.
You can customise the colours of individual folder icons & add decorations to individual folder/files.
So I would suggest LMDE or Mint (Cinnamon DE).

The look is a little bit like Windows - only the childish appearance is missing.

Clear this person is trolling...If you like the look and feel of Windows then stick with Windows. Don't come to a Linux forum and complain its not Windows, for many of us we are very thankful that Linux is not Windows or Apple.

"Trolling" might be a bit harsh, but they've certainly received quite a bit of helpful input and rejected all of it.

Yes, they should just stick with Windows. Personally, I'm done with them.

Try looking at Budgie desktop environment. It is developed by rhe people who make the Solus distro. So try googling Solus Budgie.

Also, you say you don't like dated looking icons, but you're okay with windows 7? That looks pretty old/basic in my opinion.

One of the best things about Linux imo is how customizable it is. You might want to just try out a distro and play with themes to see if you can find something you like. They can't make distros to fit everyone out of the box.

I'd suggest Solus with budgie DE. I believe Ubuntu has a community build with the Budgie desktop environment.

Edit: After reading the comments here, perhaps you should just stay with windows. If you're just browsing the web, and you don't have an issue with windows, then stick with it. Linux is not windows and if you can't get past the looks of the icons seeming "dated" then the rest of Linux won't suit you either.

I'm beginning to think you're trolling bc you say you are an outdoors person and just want to use your computer to browse the internet yet your extremely concerned about the icons themes looking modern. Seems odd. Good luck in your search

You could could look at Zorin or you can make any distro look like Windows using Xfce and installing a Windows theme from https://www.pling.com/s/XFCE Or for other desktop environments you might be able to do that by going to .https://www.pling.com/
