ALSA configuration

I'm trying to install ALSA on my Red Hat 9 system. My sound device is an Aureal AU8830. I've compiled the ALSA driver, lib and utils packages but, when I try to run modprobe on the snd-au8830 module, I get the following message

...snd-au8830.o: init_module: No such device

does anyone know what is causing this?
