Admin password lost


How do I get past - give root password for maintenance or type Control - d to continue

Boot in single user mode.

Hi, and welcome to LQ,

You should boot the system in single user mode by passing the kernel the parameter "single" through the bootloader.

If you are using grub, just press "e" to edit then modify the line where it says "linux ..." and add "single" at the end. Then you simply run do the following to change root's password:

Not if it's RedHat/CentOS 7....

The OP didn't provide enough information to give them a more detailed answer.
