Adjusting Sound Volume (need a mixer?)

Is there a way to set default sound volume to 100%? I'm using Vector Linux 4.0 and the default sound level requires me to put my speakers at full volume to hear just a soft sound.

How can I fix this? Do I need to download a mixer? If so, will the adjustment be permenant? I want it to default at 100%. Basically, I just want to adjust the volume physically using my speaker controls.

Thanks!

If you use alsa, try alsamixer (/usr/bin/alsamixer).

Try "aumix" if you got it installed, if not install it 9)

It's a real nice console/gtk mixer you can adjust the levels here and save them.
aumix -L loads your saved values so you could add this to your bootup scripts as well.
