Add sound to Ubuntufor 12.04 and above

After upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04, I have lost sound. The sound worked fine in 8.04.
I have been trying many suggestions and still no sound for Ubuntu 12.04 and 13.1
for my Sony Vaio.
