AD1980 sound on Suse 9.0

Ok I just loaded Suse 9.0 on this machine after installing a new mainboard. An ASUS A7V8X-MX SE which has an AD1980 chipset for sound. YAST shows that the AC97 driver is loaded. KAmix comes up and says that nothing is muted, although there was no sound at all. Nothing. I noticed in another thread that ALSA 1.0.3 was supposed to fix this, maybe... so I installed the 1.0.3 rpm with no love at all.

Here is everything from dmesg:

so aside from the usb and hda errors, what is the deal with the sound? I know that the hda errors are bad. And probably either needs a fsck or maybe those errors mean it's going to fail.... I want to make sound work first and then I'll deal with that. Strange priorities, I know, but it's not my machine and that is what the owner wants. Thanks!

so no one has a clue about this? I can't be the only one with this problem... maybe I missed a post in another thread that answers this. If I did, sorry 'bout that, and would someone kindly show me the thread? Thanks.

btw I found out that the reason for all the noise concerning usb and sda in dmesg. It's because the HP printer (psc 2210xi all-in-one) has ports for compact flash and one of the ports has a pin that broke off and is shorting out. Can't be good... I hate these printers.
